Miss Lontay's Frog Encounter..

On leaving Jellewang Jungle to catch a flight from Khota Bharu to Kuala Lumpar I quickly grab my hiking boots chucked them in a carrier bag and put them in the over head compartment on the plane. On arrival in KL I opened the compartment only to notice my bag was moving about? - at first I thought it may have been a small snake from the Jungle that had sort comfort in one of my boots. I was a bit nervous as I had an ongoing flight to Sydney, Australia. God knows what customs would say! I decided to go straight to the disabled toliets to take a private peek. To my surprise and relief a great big smiley frog stared out from my boot. Golly, how do I explain this?

I left the toilet went through to arrivals only to be harressed by the local taxi drivers. I didn't need a taxi as I was off to Sydney, however, I knew someone that did. When I asked the poor taxi driver if he could take my frog to the pond outside the airport he thought I was joking. I smiled sweetly showed him my boot and gave him a little wink, then off he went to the middle of the field with my boot and my new best friend from Jellewang! - what a beautiful memory.

2008 "THE YEAR OF THE FROG" GLOBAL CAMPAIGN

Amphibian Ark and The World Association of Zoos and Aquaria (WAZA) are leading a global campaign “The Year of the Frog” to raise public awareness and understanding of the amphibian extinction crisis caused by chytrid fungus. This will be the greatest conservation challenge of a species in the history of humanity. The money raised will help sustain survival of the amphibian population through ex-situ programmes. Amphibians are suitable for captive breeding. If every zoo in the world rescues one species, the aim will be achieved, bringing hope to our smiliest friends.

MISS LONTAY AND CONSERVATION
By developing a synergy between the fashion world and conservation, Miss Lontay believes that fashion can play a vital role in raising awareness to the public. Through creating beautiful garments with conservation imagery, messages, fabrics and styles, in a joyful and sophisticated manner. Fashion can help to stimulate and sustain long term interests in conservation and our environment. Miss Lontay is helping support The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, Amphibian Ark and Orchid Conservation International by donating a percentage of her net profits to help developing conservation programmes in Zoological and Botanical worlds.

FROGS AND THE ECOSYSTEM
Frogs play an important role in the ecosystem, making up a large basis of the food chain, which other creatures depend on. They connect aquatic life to land life. Living on insects they help keep control of the insect population. With out frogs we could easily end up with a mosquito epidemic.

WHAT'S HAPPENING TO OUR FROGS?
Chytrid fungus is picked up on the frogs sticky foot pads. It works like a parasite covering the entire body, the frog’s skin pores are then unable to function properly, quickly causing the frog to die of dehydration.

FROGS PROVIDE VITAL BIOMEDICINES
Certain frogs species produce chemicals compounds that are refined for antibiotics and analgesics. One species in Africa is linked to a chemical that disables the AIDS virus. Frogs therefore have an important role in bio medication and human health. They are as precious to our existence as we are to theirs.
